Villa Antioquia: A Contemporary Caribbean House

Integrating Interior and Exterior Spaces

The design concept for Villa Antioquia revolves around the idea of creating interior spaces that allow for permeability, both physically and visually, with the surrounding exterior areas. The architectural elements, such as the entry lights, native materials, and custom construction techniques, contribute to the development of a new contemporary Caribbean style.

One of the standout features of Villa Antioquia is its extensive cantilever on the facade, which serves as the entrance threshold of the house. This architectural element not only adds visual interest but also fulfills a functional purpose. The use of custom formwork for the columns creates a corrugated appearance, resulting in a play of shadows and patterns that change throughout the day. This attention to detail and architectural honesty is carried through to the interior design of the project.

With a total construction area of 1130 square meters on a 2,630 square meter lot, Villa Antioquia is a private residence located in Cap Cana, Punta Cana. The design takes into account the climatic factors of the Caribbean, incorporating natural ventilation strategies and a connection to the surrounding landscape.

The use of native materials, such as natural carved stones and wood coverings, combined with large-format marble tiles, creates a contemporary color palette and textures that are typical of the tropical Caribbean location. The design also incorporates strategic skylights to provide continuous vertical natural light, enhancing the interior spaces of the first level.

Overcoming challenges posed by the regulations of the complex, the design team successfully created a flat-fronted lightweight roof that gives the impression of a flat roof from a human-scale perspective. This innovative solution allowed for the inclusion of strategic skylights and maintained compliance with the 60% sloping roof requirement.

Villa Antioquia was realized over a two-year period, from its initial presentation to its turnkey completion. Situated in the Yarari tourist development in Punta Espada Cap Cana, Dominican Republic, this contemporary Caribbean house stands as a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the design team led by Dante Luna.

Villa Antioquia was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2021 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The design of Villa Antioquia integrates industry best practices and exhibits competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
